What’s better than celebrating your 83rd birthday and your 55th wedding anniversary on the same day? Feeling great while doing it! Thanks to Dr. Lam at Lam Vascular & Associates, Bob Bustin was able to celebrate another year of life and another year of wedded bliss to his sweetheart Sally pain free!
Lifelong Kilgore resident Bob has been an athlete his entire life. After an impressive high school football career with all-district distinctions, Bob was named Most Outstanding Athlete in East Texas while at Kilgore College before going on to play football at Baylor University.
He has served his community most of his adult life in one capacity or another. From Kilgore city councilman to baseball commissioner, Bob Bustin is a do-er; someone who serves others and makes a difference every day.
So when leg pain started to slow him down, he knew he needed to do something about it. His trusted cardiologist checked the blood flow in his legs and determined there was blockage that needed to be cleared.
“We scheduled the surgery and he tried but couldn’t penetrate the blockage,” said Bob. “He suggested we see how things progressed and try again in six months. But I was not willing to wait six months.”
Through a series of fortunate events, Bob was referred to Dr. Lam at Lam Vascular & Associates in Dallas. Sure, it was 125-mile commute to Dr. Lam’s office from Kilgore, but for Bob, the potential benefits outweighed any inconvenience, including a long drive into the big city.
How Did Dr. Lam Make a Difference?
Dr. Lam studied Bob’s medical records, examined him, asked him a series of questions and performed some additional tests before diagnosing him with peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition that develops when arteries narrow and become clogged with plaque—fatty deposits and cholesterol—that limits blood flow to the legs.
He recommended cleaning out the arteries and then placing stents first in Bob’s right leg, and soon after, the left, in order to open up the arteries and restore blood flow. Just two weeks post op, Bob feels so much better.
“Before I saw Dr. Lam, I would stand up and then have to sit back down because I just didn’t have any blood flow and felt like I would fall,” he said. “In fact, I did fall twice. Once in my yard and once in the house.” But just two weeks post op, Bob was steady on his feet, feels confident walking around and most importantly, his severe leg pain has subsided.
Bob couldn’t be happier with the care he received at Lam Vascular & Associates. “They treated me like I was the only patient they had,” said Bob. “Dr. Lam did everything he said he was going to do, plus more. He and his entire staff are highly professional.”
Today, Bob is feeling great again and looking forward to celebrating another birthday and anniversary. “All I want for my birthday is another year!” he said. “If you have any doubts about your health and don’t know what’s going on, you’d be wise to go see Dr. Lam at Lam Vascular & Associates. I’m so glad I did.”
How Can Dr. Lam Help Treat Your Peripheral Artery Disease?
The overall goal for treating PAD at Lam Vascular & Associates is to alleviate pain. In severe cases of PAD, the team may recommend procedures such as peripheral bypass surgery, angioplasty or stenting (as in the case of Bob) to restore blood circulation in your legs and give you back your ability to walk.
